Difference?

I have noticed that when I go to Tucows some downloads are listed as X11 and others as console. Is my assumption that X11 applications run from the shell/Konsole and the console applications are GUI?

Haven't checked out Tucows' Linux but I'd figure X11 would be for graphical post-startx/runlevel 4-5 apps and console would be for text pre-startx/runlevel 3 apps. In other words, apps dependent on the X server and those that aren't. Freshmeat or sourceforge or whatever has the console category and they may refer to X apps by X11 as well or use a different term, but that's the basic idea.

-- Oh, or to put it another way, in X, X11 apps would run in their own windows and console apps would run in xterms. Not sure if that's what you were saying with the last part or not.

It's the other way round... X11 apps are X Windows (or as u say, GUI) while console are command line apps.

BTW, freshmeat.net is a better place to find linux apps.

www.sourceforge.com is my favorite

I suppose Konsole should have given it away.

Thanks. Will try out those other sites.
