I have just installed Fedora Core 1 (full installation) onto my PC. Love the environment and am hoping to move over from windows shortly! It is a clean install onto a new HDD so no dual boot issues to worry about. I have run the internet wizard and have input all of the isp and account details. Now, how do I inititate a dial up connection and subsequently terminate it? In the networking control panel I can see my modem and my network card but both are marked as inactive. In mozilla, it says that I am online but I am not!

I have tried to activate the modem and subsequently achieve a connection but then have no idea how to terminate it and in any case the network window still says that the modem is inactive even once dial up has been achieved....

PS - Does AOL work with Linux?

Do you have KDE installed? If you do you could try using kppp, its alot like windows dialup networking. you can also look in /var/log/messages for clues to the problem.
Does AOL work in linux?...hmmm,nope, but AIM does you can dl it from AOL ,or you could use gaim which you may already have installed.

With kppp you can set it to execute a program on connection. Example==> /usr/local/mozilla/mozilla . then when you connect using kppp, mozilla will startup .

As an additional note you may want to dash through your service configuration and stop any services you don't need
before you logon to the net. A stand alone work station with a dialup connection dosen't need very many services running to surf the net.As an example the services I have running are: gpm,ipchains,iptables.lpr,keytable,random & rawdevices,
and I'm looking into if I really need rawdevices. Also don't
log on to the net from root. Create a user account if you haven't already done so ,and use it for all yor activities. for security reasons root should be used sparingly.

Thanks Lindy - I'll give all those ideas a try. Any idea on the active/inactive status of my modem and how the activate button works in the network window?

By the way.. clicking the activate button seems to initiate a dial up connection but then even once connected the status of the modem doesn't change to active (I would have assumed that maybe it should??) And therefore I can't click on the inactive button..

Kppp will minumize to the taskbar upon connection , but if you want some feedback, in kppp setup under the misc. tab you can select it dock into the panel which will give you a couple of blinky lights next to the clock ;-)
