US.Robotics fax modem 56kb modem is not fully supported. More info at http://veera.bizhat.com/sm56
Or try searching google for US Robotics modem linux

ksgill 04-23-2005 09:50 AM

http://www.linmodems.org/

1) Run the "scanmodem" tool from the website to find the exact chipset.

2) It will tell you exact chipset your modem has and then will make suggestions about the drivers.

Good Luck

I have the same problem with a USR external modem. It was recommended as a good "Linux" modem (I have tried it with Mandrake 10.1, Fedora Core 2&3, Debian 3.0, and Knoppix) and it wasn't. I bought a Best Data 56K and it has seemed to cure my problem. I have Googled and forumed to death on the answer for my USR to no avail. I am still looking for the answer as I have the USR on one of my Debian boxes and still try if from time to time in hopes of finding the cure. If all else fails and I am lucky they will get DSL into my rural area soon. Good Luck.

ammm , so the problem is in the modem !
that`s what i think ..

but the big problem is that all poeple say`s that
usr external modem with serial port is the best to use it in ur linux box .. and that`s un-true

i really try to do all the solution to fix this problem but nothing happenS

vstealerv 04-23-2005 05:40 PM

i try both kppp and wvdial but without results !!

and this is how i create a connection :

first /

Code:

[root@localhost ~]# wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

----- second i enter my account information as shown here

i enter here
vi /etc/wvdial.conf

then i edit the information

Code:

after that i try to connect with typing wvdial

Hello vstealerv,

Try in KPPP to change the INIT string, you can Google for you INIT strings or maybe your modem is on this page http://modems.rosenet.net/inits.php/116

US Robotics not always works with standard INIT string's.

You can forget some of the postings here, there are no Serial RS-232 Windows soft-modems, also you not have to know which chipset your US Robotics uses...it is US Robotics.

I am using a US Robotics/3Com 56k FaxModem Model 5610 and it works with Mandrake 10.1 and Vector linux. But I also have a US Robotics 56K Fax Modem that is a winmodem and it won't work with linux. So if your modem doesn't have the controller on it, like the man said, you will need to get another one.
