Dial on demand doesn't work

I'm a newbie running SuSE 8.0 Personal. SuSE installs Actiontec PCI Modem w/ Lucent Venus Chipset (definitely no winmodem). Modem will connect and browse via wvdial, but can't get dial on demand to work. Configuring with YAST2 appears to be doing something, but Kinternet log indicates modem is not configured. Modem invariably mapped to ttyS4 at installation, which I think is the root of the problem I suspect this kernel allows modem mapped only to ttyS0 through ttyS3 in order for Yast2 modem configuration to work. Looking for solution.
