Unhappy DHCP service problem

Hi,

I'm using RHEL 5. Whenever I start any network services or when I configure the ip address, the machine stops working.

when I set ip value, then it gives an error message like
"SIOCSIFFLAGS : cannot assign requested address". I tried search in the google, but no success.

Can anyone help me out solve this problem?

You don't say what you're typing in, or what you're trying to do; your problem description is fairly vague.

How do you "set ip value"?? What are you trying to set it to?? And when you say "the machine stops working"...do you mean it drops off the network, or kernel-panics and dies?

Unhappy network service is not working.

Sorry about the wrong title.
When I started DHCP service, the machine got hung up. I thought this happened because of DHCP. Later, I learned that if I change the IP address or for that matter any network related service, machine stops working means hangs up.

I used "ifconfig eth0:1 192.168.1.7" command to change my ip address. I even tried the GUI mode(using neat command) to change my id address
