What distro (including version) of Linux are you using? Some distros come with tools to automatically mount/unmount floppies, CD-ROMs, etc., but others don't.
Try Rahul's suggestions; if you have questions about them, just ask.

Actually, if you're using Gnome you should be able to just right-click anywhere on the desktop. A menu appears where you can select "Floppy" from the "Disks" menu item; the floppy mounts and an icon for the floppy appears on the desktop. To unmount the floppy, chose that option from the menu that appears when you right-click on the floppy icon.
