Device icons

Gnome Debian x86_64

I am new to gnome and can't find how to display device icons on the desktop when...DVD insertion, usb-drive, camera etc.

I have them all auto-mounted but need a device icon for 'Eject', 'Safely remove' etc...

Applications > System Tools > Configuration Editor > apps > Nautilus > Desktop > check whichever you need. Devices can be unmounted by right-clicking and selectin "eject" from the context menu.
Btw, the Configuraton Editor may not be available out of the box. Right-click "Applications", select Edit menus and check whether the item is enabled.

Thanks, but I've been in the config editor all day.
The only option is to make volumes visible which puts my fourteen partitions on the desktop and still gives me no options for dismounting the flash-drive for instance.
Is there perhaps something I haven't installed?
I installed only CD 1 and updated.

I have found that I can open My Computer and unmount/eject things there.

I suppose I was expecting Gnome to be like KDE.
