/: Device busy?

Using Fedora core 3 sometimes when i shutdown ior reboot, once it starts booting up, it states that filesystem has errors forced check, i belive it to be that the root is not being unmounted, i tried unmounting it via the konsole and it unmounts all my other drives but not the root and says that the device is busy?

You can't unmount a file system while it is in use. The root file system is always in use.

The way init scripts handle a clean shutdown is to remount (which you can do to a filesystem in use) / as read only and flush all the write buffers. It doesn't matter if you don't properly unmount a read-only filesystem because your not editing it in and way.

Now when it starts booting up it suddenly restarts itself to the shell and states that:

fsck.ext2: is a directory while trying to open /

FAILED

I think i may have edited to fstab file wrong, how can i edit the fstab file in the shell its giving me, or is this not the way to resolve this?
