/dev/sr0 attempt to access beyond end of device
 
I am trying to install the Linux 1.5 client of Enemy Territory: Quake Wars. I had this working perfectly before I re-imaged my machine. Everything goes perfect until it starts to copy files from the DVD. It copies the first file (pak000.pk4) just fine. Then when it moves on to copy the second file (pak001.pk4) it fails at 61%, then the installed undoes everything and exits.

I know the DVD itself is not the problem as it is in good condition and has worked before. However the drive maybe a problem as it has acted a bit weird since I re-imaged. For example /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvd entries in fstab do not auto mount the drive when it did on my last install. I had to add /dev/sr0 to fstab. This install is the same version of debian linux and was installed using the same net install disk.

Anyways right after running the installed I checked dmesg and I saw several entries that looked like this on:

Any ideas what is going on so I can correct this?

Also using konqueror I checked and see the DVD is 1.9GB in size. I used dd to make an .iso of the DVD and the .iso came out to be 1.1GB. It just isn't adding up

I figured out the drive is the problem, just don't understand why. I connected a USB DVDRW drive from a different manufacturer and the install went just fine. It also copied several other files before it tried to copy pak000.pk4.

Has anyone else seen this before?

I have this problem now- and a new dvd drive seems to fix it every time. i burn about 8 dvds a month and a drive only ever lasts about 1 year. Sometimes its the burn that goes funny - but this time its the read. I'm going to replace and test and report back in a couple of days. cheers

New DVD drive - problem solved. this is my 3rd or 4th drive in as many years - i've lost count. they work for awhile and then break.
this one would burn OK, but got the beyond end of device error when reading the file - at 1022MB

Cdrom & dvd drives can only have region reset 4 or 5 times, that's probably why they go bad so soon.
I have only had to set region only in windows & am not sure if linux automatically sets it during installation.
