/dev/sequencer not working for ES1371 module in RHL8PE

I realize that RHL8PE is EOL but I haven't the time to update. I have been trying to use kmid and timidity but timidity won't open and kmid claims that /dev/sequencer is in use by another program, which it isn't. I've tried everything I could think of with no luck. I was wanting professional help so I came here. My sound card plays CDs through the audio play and is found during bootup (Ensoniq ES1371[AudioPCI-97] (rev02)) but the midi synth stuff don't work at all. I can't find drivers for my sound card because it is old. I don't know what else to try now.

timidity is a piece of software and is not predicated on any hardware device nodes or interface
