Thanks friends for your quick response, like I said I am new to Linux and because of sites like yours that answers question for newbies like me I think might have to go with the Ubuntu Server, my only issue is that my main home computer is running Windows 10, which I tell you was a big mistake to upgrade from Windows 7 it the current OS. Now that I might use my windows computer to access the server I thought installing GUI will make that easier as I understand that OpenSSH is not native to windows OS. So now is how do I use windows computer to access the Ubuntu Server? An while we are at it, is there a step-by-guide for installing and configuring Ubuntu 14.4 Server?
Thanks guys for your help. |
For most users, almost any of the modern linux big name distro's could be an excellent choice for a home server. Look at almost any of the top 20 and www.distrowatch.com for some ideas. Try a few too. See how you like them. Consider Debian or Opensuse too would be my suggestion.

If you do a web search for "media server [distro name]," you will find many tutorials and articles about how to set up a media server.
