Detection problems when hot plugging USB devices

Hi,
Hi,
I have a curious USB flashdrive problem; If i have any USB flashdrives connected to the computer befor a i turn on then after boot up they are detected correctly and everything is fine until i disconnect them. If i then reconnect them they are either not detected or only partially detected. For example i have a 4 gig USB drive that is correctly detected at boot up but if i disconnect it and then reconnect it is not detected at all, another usb drive is the same at boot up but after disconnection and reconnection only the first partition is detected. However my ipod shuffle is correctly detected at all times. What is happening here?

Is there a command line option to attempt to mount usb devices. Using a conventional file manager such as pcman or thunar doesnt seem to work.

Any help with this problem would be much appreciated.

Cheers.

Hi

What distro?

Are you unmounting the drives before you unplug them?

Hi,
Thanks for the replies.
The distro is mepis using the fluxbox/icemw window managers.
No, i haven't tried un-mounting before disconnecting but i havent had to do this with other systems eg ubuntu, simply mepis but i will try it and see what happens. However if i plug them in after having already booted up they are still not detected or partially detected so i am not sure how this would help.

Cheers.

You MAY be dealing with two separate issues. I would try umounting them and see if that helps with those drives. Usually all you have to do is right click on the drive and there should be an unmount option.

It would also help if you tell us which version and arch of mepis you are using.

Hi,
OK i booted up with the a usb flash drive plugged in and checked to see that it had been detected which it had. I then unmounted the drive befor unplugging it and plugging it back in and found that it was not detected.

Any ideas?

The version of mepis is 7.5.

Your help is much appreciated.

Cheers.
