Desktop switched from KDE 4 to KDE 3 on reboot?

Hi there,

Very strange. Lost KDE 4, all the desktop icons added are now 10101101 icons, I have a bubble desktop background that keeps reasserting itself even when changing it, the file Dolphin mgr and another standard icon on the panel are not working, and the panel looks different.

I have renamed per instructions posted below on the forum, but other than a reboot anything else I should try? KControl says its 3.5 not 4.0 also. Something is very "off".

>> Well... maybe it is the $HOME/.kde directory, but you will lose your custom settings (if any). Another option is to run the KDE control center (Alt-F2 and kcontrol).

Thanks,
Petey

I think that you need to start from the begining, because I don't find your post to be very understandable. What have you done that could possibly cause this problems?Did you tried to or did you install any KDE 3.5.x packages?

I created a new login. Whilst the intro box says KDE 4, the desktop image is different than original for OpenSUSE 11.1. It's a light blue image with what look like spotlights in various shades of blue. Oxygen I think.

The differences I've noticed is now icons group together (like with Windows) and you have a number showing the number of instances (this I cannot seem to turn off by default). When mousing over a tab on the panel, I get an animated hover with info, that slides across until it's overhead. Even the elements next to desktop icons slide out in a different way than before.

I've also lost the 'Recently installed apps' in the menu system.

Hi Alan,

I'm not sure I appreciate your tone. I think that's uncalled for.

Linux has had problems closing down recently. It sometimes plays the closing down tune, then hangs and the icon stops dead. One problem this caused was my external NTFS drive no longer mounting. The next time this happened and I had no option than to power off, this altered my desktop completely, changed the icons to 101011101 image icons with no details in the properties (essentially blank).

Another way of putting that might be "How do you investigate what is causing a system to hang upon shutdown?" Is there a log one can view to post about that?

Enjoy the weekend.

Petey
