Desktop Stuff

I have this nifty little program called coolmon in XP that lets me put system information in text on my desktop......any programs that will do this under KDE for Linux?

And also, how do I put a command line directly onto the desktop? I've seen tons of screenshots with beautiful ones but I can't find the software anywhere!

Closest thing to this is probably going to be something called gkrellm:
www.gkrellm.net

That's probably a few different things you've seen. You can make aterm or eterm (from the AfterStep and Enlightenment suites respectively) do something like this (be completely transparent). What you usually see though is more likely going to be a program called root-tail or a version of it. What this does is display your log files (or any text file actually) on the background of your desktop. If you checkout an older screenshot of mine:
ftp://curvins.com/pics/screen.png
It is the upper left corner. That's just scrolling logs using root-tail. Love that tool too!

:)

UPDATE:
I just remembered something else that might be more of what you are looking for with coolmon (or in addition to Gkrellm anyway):
SuperKaramba
www.freshmeat.net

:)

Cool

Ugh, superkaramba LOOKS like fun, but I found it:

1. Too hard to configure easily
2. Not as appealing as you'd expect unless you put a lot of time into it
3. Meh

And btw, Meh is the best word ever. :) It means mediocre/shows indifference.

MasterC 08-11-2003 05:12 AM

:D I use that all the time :) I use it to nicely describe something that truly sucks though, to give it the look of mediocrity. I say "meh" but I really mean "OMG no". If something is truly mediocre I say "It's worth a shot". And if something is truly worth a shot it's "Definitely worth your time".

But yeah, nothing beats the "Meh" cause it's a mutter. ;)

Cool

Hehe. I love Meh.....anyways, I'm off to sleep once again after I add something cool to my sig in a min ;) You'll see it.

I think you'll find most of your eye candy this way. You will have of course those easy things, but for the good/usable eye candy that can be easily tweaked, it usually takes a bit of work (in linux).

GKrellm for instance:
Great app, definitely a must have. However to get a lot of the functionality out of it you have to go through and find a bunch of plugins that do what you want, install em, configure em, tweak em...

But in the end, when you sit back (or bring in a friend to show them all the work you've done) and admire your work, you feel more accomplished in doing it, and can appreciate the tool a bit more. Plus it's (assuming you are male :D ) amazing to the girls when you can pull up a finely crafted Gkrellm and impress em al that much more! :D (not really, but meh ;) )

Cool

ROFL. Ummm.....the girls I know wouldn't know the difference between a good gkrellm and a bad gkrellm unfortunately.

I loved when I told my gf I was installing Linux....she immediately goes, "Is that the penguin? COOL!!!"

Gotta love women.......... :) NIGHT!

Well, I calculated the age of the earth and made it into a mersenne prime, and put it into my sig.....u like it? :)

MasterC 08-11-2003 05:52 AM

:D

Yeah, that's cool!

Tux is one of the best mascots ever!

:)

Cool
