Post Desktop not active

I am using an Intel Pentium 4 computer . my installation of UBUNTU 8.10 is going smoothly and login also taking place but my desktop is without any icon to proceed and and mouse click is not giving any response. What can be the reason. Is it any problem with 32bit 64bit OS?

I want you to check the mouse setup first.
According to your available mouse,
run the command:
Code:
setup
and select the proper mouse setup.
Then let us know if it improves.
