I downloaded the browser Opera from the Opera website and all my desktop icons are now triangles with question mark inside. When I click on a triangle it opens the window but the window is blank of any text . Cannot use anything because cannot maneuver within blank window. The windows only have small boxes where text usually is. I need help but am new to this OS so please be as clear as possible in info you give me. All help will be appreciated.
To begin with, which distribution of Linux are you using? You haven't indicated which you are using and that is necessary as there are in excess of 500 different distributions. Most of the time, software is downloaded from the repositories/servers of the specific distribution you are using. If you download from the Opera site at the link below, you can see that it asks your for "distribution and vendor" and there are 13 specific distributions you can select. There are also three options to select DEB, RPM or TAR. Which of these is apprpriat for you will depend upon which Linux you have.
I don't really see how you could get the result you are referring to by simply downloading and installing Opera. So start by indicating which Linux you use and the version and where you downloaded Opera from.
Linux Precise Puppy 5.7.1. DownloadedOpera from www.opera.com. Did not see options you listed. It said download for Linux and I pressed the download button.
At the link you posted, clicking on the green Download now button will get you a .deb version of Opera. That is pretty much just used for Debian and Ubuntu derivatives. Just below that you see 'prefer rpm package'. Those are used mostly for Red Hat and derivatives. I doubt either will work on Puppy. If you have a 64bit computer, use the link below. Under Select distribution, you will not see Puppy listed. Select other tar.xz If you have a 32bit computer, select Show other versions just above the download tab and on the new page, click on linux i386 and the next window will show a list of all the releases of Opera including the current at the top. You will be at a page that looks like the original page with the Download now except it will say Linux i386. After downloading, you will need to extract the tar.xz folder and there should be a README file or some finally with install instructions. I don't use Puppy so, good luck.
Thanks again for your help. Do you have any idea why my desk top icons in Linux Precise Puppy running from live cd suddenly changed to triangles and I have lost all text in windows. All in have showing in the windows are little square boxes.

No. I don't see how anything could change on a Live CD as it is a read-only filesystem and nothing changed will remain after reboot. I guess Puppy has the pupsave file so that might matter. Haven't used Puppy in years so have no idea.
Checking the link posted by the OP, I noticed that it is a .deb file on the download. Below the download button it asks if you would prefer the RPM package. Neither will work directly on Puppy because it doesn't use .deb files or RPM packaging. The link I posted above gives you the option of downloading a tar.xz format which should work but will be a little more complicated for a new user. The link below has an install script to install Opera which I tried a few days ago and it worked.
Although you are better off using software from your system repository, a direct download from the site of the creators of the software will almost always have a more current and up to data version.
as far as I remember Puppy and all of its litter have a special way of installing "outside" apps and not all apps can just install on them like a "normal" Linux install. I too have not used puppy for a long time, if you have a 64bit I'd suggest trying fatdog64 it has a nice repo to it as well. It is a offshoot of puppy, only 64bit.
You can install .deb packages on most Puppy versions, but for Opera you should find a .pet file specifically for Puppy, which is better: always stick with your distro's repository as far as possible.
The little box problem suggests that somehow you've managed to change the name of the default font to one that doesn't exist. I don't know a solution for that outside Gnome (the only place I've ever experienced it) and I suspect it would be easier to start again from the beginning.
Thanks everyone for trying to help. Will just re-install. Have purchased a new live cd Precise Puppy 5.7.1. I do want to say two replies were not appreciated. I am a newbie and sorry I am not quite up to your level of expertise. Special thanks to Yancey for posting help without judgement of my intellect.
Of course you are always welcome to donate via the donate button, but it's usually not required to do so. I hope you didn't buy it from an Ebay seller. Then the money wouldn't go towards the project.
