Dell Inspiron 8000 Installation problems...

Sorry to bring this over here, but I'm having serious problems with my Linux installation. I want to install RedHat 9 but I can't figure out how to get the stupid thing to recognise my 15.1" monitor, and I can't get into the Xconfig stuff after it doesn't recognise it...

I've got W*ndows on my laptop at the moment in the hopes that you guys could help me in my quest for W*ndows freedom...

For more information... Check the JustLinux.com boards, under Installation... That's where I originally asked this question and it goes into further details...

I had the exact same problem with a Dell Inspiron 7500 notebook (my only linux box) with RH9.

I couldn't get the graphical installation to work, on account that it didn't detect my moniter (same as you). So I did a text-installation (it isn't more difficult) and when it asks you to select your moniter type use 'generic moniter'.

After installation, try out X and it should work fine. That is all I had to do. If nothing works, I had no problem with RH8 detecting my Inspiron 7500 moniter, so you can try that.

I use red hat 9 on an i8k, too. first of all you may want to check out the yahoo group linux-dell-laptops. they have a lot of good info and a good FAQ. And selecting 'generic laptop panel X by X' would probably be better in your case, since red hat 9 gives you more options.

Yes thanks stevenhasty, Nerezza you will want to choose generic laptop panel res by res. I was just trying to help from what I could remember of installation.

And thanks for that group , I will definately be one to check it out too.
