Deleted wrong files in Jaunty. Need to repair in terminal (PLEASE HELP)

I am a newbie to Jaunty, so please forgive my descrip. terminology. I need help please. I am experiencing a great amount of grief with my Jaunty install. I can no longer get a login screen in Jaunty. When I try to boot normally for this install I get an unclean shutdown screen & it goes into the "checking drive" mode. I uninstalled some applications such as has to do with touchpad, remote desktop, xorg-driver-fglrx etc. I reinstalled xorg-driver-fglrx, which I later found out that I do not need. I have an AMD64 HP system with ATI graphics onboard. I need to find out how to load graphic user interface in Jaunty. Some of the necessary files have been completely removed by me & I need to reload the repositories and update my current install. The partition is encrypted but I have been able to login with the username & password for THIS encrypted install using the "repair broken system" part of the GRUB screen. How do I go into the terminal and load repositories, and maybe the kernel so I can do an update/upgrade? I do not know if upgrade is part of what I need to do........ I wanna keep my Jaunty install so I can access 50G of data that is on this install. I have made no backup of this data!!! I am able to login to my install using my username & password after I get to the "#" prompt, (option "fix broken system" in GRUB) so I know login can be done under username of install. I just need to know what to TYPE into the terminal to restore the necessary files in the right place to make it run. (Is it called terminal at that point?) Can someone please help me? You could try "sudo apt-get [packagename] for the missing packages.
First, I would suggest booting to a Live CD, such as Knoppix, and taking a look at the file /etc/apt/sources.list to make sure that it is present and populated. Without a valid sources.list, apt will not work. You could also look around at other configuration files and stuff. You would have to unlock the encryption first--that's something I have no experience with from a Live CD. There's more on apt here. It would probably be a good idea to read the entire article before you try using it, given how damaged your system seems to be. You might also be able to back up crucial data files using Knoppix. If so, it might be better just the back them up, say to a thumb drive or two or three, and install anew. |

But you may just want to dig through everything you can find and see if you can find anything out of place ... Of course that's a bit like looking for the soap in a tub the size of texas ... It may take a minute ... Hopefully someone with more experiance can come help you out. Sounds like a really s***ty situation, and I sincerely wish you the best of luck in getting it sorted out ... In the future you may consider a bi-weekly backup or something. |
Jaunty is not supported any more, you shouldn't use it.
Get a newer version of Ubuntu (or even a different distro, if you like). |

I have tried to run the sudo apt-get install for gdm, sources.list, update & upgrade to no avail. I have burned a Knoppix disk & was able to get the corrupted sda5 mounted. When I boot from the GRUB, it goes through a disk check and gives me a prompt. I am also running a dual-boot with WindowsXP.....forgot to say that in prev. post. I have tried to install another instance of Jaunty, but when I tried to resize the sda5 (Jaunty) partition, the install informed me that there are disk errors that need to be fixed. It would go no further. I have tried to get the encryption passphrase (which I did not write down) by using "sudo ecryptfs-unwrap-passphrase /home/username/.ecryptfs/wrapped-passphrase" command from the prompt after login with my username & password. As I said, I was able to mount & see the directories in the encrypted "home" directory......but not the files. I might be using a version of Knoppix that is not quite suitable for this operation. Any suggest for Knop Version? At this point, I would like to be able to just get the data from the home directory & reformat the partition, then do an install of the latest distro of ubuntu. I have also gotten a lot of multiply-claimed blocks. I was given a choice of cloning the blocks & I said yes to each time it asked. After an hour or so, I just hit the power strip & rebooted. How can I copy all 50 GIG of files to a place where I can put them on another drive. I really wanna fix the disk errors too. Can I do this using Knoppix and a USB external hard-drive? I have already installed Maverick Meerkat 10.10 on another drive that I got by making another partition in sda5.....(the drive that all of my data resides on). I have not put any files on the sad5 drive & am not doing stuff that will write over the files....I hope.
I will try to install Jaunty on that (/home) partition again....maybe just install base system. I don't know if I will write over the files or not. I would miss those file that I might potentially lose. I will hold off for now. Thanks for pondering my problem. Peace, kingschild |
Basically, what I wanted to say is that if you can get to the command line in Jaunty, you can do something like this (these commands assume that you are logged in to the accuont who's home directory you want to back up, not root):

thank you all for the input. Not sure if I need to create a new thread for this. I cannot seem to find the button for creating a new thread...(DUH).:scratch::banghead: I have given up & installed Lucid on the drive originally the subject of this thread. I have installed another distro of ubuntu on my HD. I had moved all of my documents and other important stuff to my 500GB hard-drive. The home directory was encrypted. I used photorec to try & recover all, but I ran out of HD space. When I examined the files it recovered, they were just unusable files....so I installed LUCID on that 500GB drive. I said "screw it! (screw me?)" Can I recover the files MOVED from my orig. 200GB drive (from 200GB drive?). I have it connected to my PC using a USB cable adapter. I can see the DIR "heartcry" that files were formerly in. Is this possible to recover files moved from this 200GB drive? How do I do this? I am thinking of burning UBU rescue remix in 10.04 to get (maybe) the latest recovery & disc tools. I have not lost hope, but I am not wanting to do anything permanently destructive. Any Ideas? Thank you for help already offered. kingschild Any ideas how I can discriminate & just get it to recover the file-types I want, as I do not think I have many ".txt" files that I need. There were alot of text file that got recover from the encrypted dirive, but not a one that I wanted. |
