Deleted files taking up space

I recently deleted a good number of files from my ntfs partition in order to free up some space. However, after deleting them (I held down the shift key to bypass the trash), they still seem to be taking up the space. I tried to look for the hidden files everywhere and I just can't find them. I looked for the .Trash-username folder but that doesn't exist. I also tried to look into the root trash and there's nothing there either. I don't know what else to do in order to get the free space back. Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you in Advance.

PS. I am using Ubuntu 7.10

I have a dual boot with two hard drives. One has Ubuntu and the other has two partitions: one with Win XP and the other used as storage space which was formated as ntfs.

Thanks.
