Delete key doesn't work on Gnome terminal in RedHat

The Delete and Backspace keys don't work on my Gnome terminal (using RedHat).
Any suggestions gratefully appreciated.

Have you checked preferences for any and all settings pertaining to these keys?

More precisely:

Current Profile / Compatibility /
Backspace key generates ->
Delete key generates ->

Backspace should be set to Control-H, and Delete should be ASCII DEL, anything different is a gross hack.

It's a big annoyance to have gnome "compatibility options" setting them to something different.
