Hi people i have huge question, after so many times deleting staff for mistake.
I am unable to get it back from my external hard drive.
can any body please help me.
I use Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
and I have all my staff on external hardrive.
After delete I knew was her , I did all the search I can possible think of.
and i dint have any good look
can any one please help me out on this issue?.

Do you have a trash file? Could you have sent the files there? Might be worth checking.

Yes, Ubuntu has a Trash Bin, and all deleted files are sent there. One must manually select "Empty Trash" to permanently remove them from the HDD.

It's in the right corner of the bottom panel, btw- open it and restore your files to their original location.

My delete file was on external hard drive not local.
and yes i did check recycle bin, but this folder it's empty too, so where everything go? on external hardware delete files!

I have found my deleted files on the .1000 folder hidden in the root folder of the USB drive.
a sub-folder to this is "files" ...
if you are using the nautilus then is a matter of going into your USB root folder and using the key conbination CTRL-> H. Or selecting view from the top menu and putting a checkmark on "Show hidden files".

I am using Gnome and I have try....... browsing hiding files too, and not luck

It really depends on how did you deleted your files.

I think in nautilus the delete actually moves the files to recycle bin. They should be in hidden folder on that drive.

But if you used command line to do so (ie. bash script, mc, del, ...) then the files are gone. Sometimes they can be recovered. If the given part of drive have not yet been overwritten then use some recovery tool. Which one depend on which filesystem was on that external drive.

Just this week I was working on a hard drive that a friend of mine messed up by mistake using his Windoze 7 (ntfs).
He could not see the drive on that operating system, but he has seen some miracles that I have been able to pull off in Linux for other people.
His major concern were his Wife's pictures. He told me that the dog's house had a leaky roof and he wanted to get back into the main house.
After lecturing him about the importance of "backing up" I took the drive home.
I made an image of the drive with "dd" and used foremost to recover his pictures from the image.
Good thing I did the image, since, upon his adamant argument that he has found a Windoze program that would do the job, he ended up wiping the data from the original drive.
Anyway, the point is that foremost will recover several types of files from most file systems, even those files that you think are gone; as my friend soon found out "the hard way"....
He made the mistake of giving the 33,500 images that I recovered to his wife to pick the ones that she wanted to print.
Imagine his surprise when he found himself back in the dog house after his wife saw "artful" pictures of female bodies.
What can I say, foremost is that good, and Linux rocks....

BTW
I made an image called samsung.iso with dd on a 1 Tb Hard drive mounted as /mnt/sde1.
Then I created the foremost folder on the same drive (The drive belongs to my friend)

then
foremost -v -o /mnt/sde1/foremost -i /mnt/sde1/samsung.iso

Several subfolders will be created on the output folder, such as jpg, bmp, exe, zip, rar ect....

The files will be numbered since foremost does not know the original file name....

-o = output file
-i = input file
-v = verbose

I just did DELETE
AND I AM USING Z: LOCATION
How can I find this file ----> They should be in hidden folder on that drive.

linux01: You mean that foremost doesn't distinquish between accidentally deleted files and intentionally deleted ones?

This may help.

Were you logged in as root or another user when you deleted the files? If so try looking in that user's home directory for a .Trash folder. Also try /home.Trash-0.

I use a dual boot computer at home and/or M$ at work. Since the partition on my USB disk is FAT when you view the drive in Windows you get to see the .1000 folder.
On Linux look for the folder .Trash hidden in your home folder.
In Ubuntu I login as Linux01, so the path to my trash folder is /home/Linux01/.Trash.
As stated before using Nautilus, navigate to your home --> Linux01.
Do the Ctrl-->h or select the "show hidden files" menu selection from the view menu.
When you try to undelete, you MUST have the drive mounted in the location that it was when the file was deleted.
To get there from the command line do the cd /home/Linux01.
then ls -al.
you should be able to view the .Trash folder

foremost recovers everything it can (based on the foremost.conf contents).
