Default owner


whats the default owner of a linux system cause i just did chown root:myuser / and now the ftp client is giving me this error :

Fatal Error - It appears that this server doesn't understand a basic FTP command. (PASS)

any suggestions pls? thanks

edit : and now when i log in on ssh its getting me this :

Maybe not such a good idea. Did you use the -R option? This would have changed the ownership of all of the files on your system. Perhaps a tedious problem to fix.

On gentoo and Ubuntu the owner:group of the / directory and all of its contents is root:root.
What distro are you using?

If you want to know how many users there are on your system, try
Code:
cat /etc/passwd
In short, different programs use different users - this is designed for system security, to isolate programs from each other.

thanks for ur reply. I am using Fedora core 3 at the moment. No i did not use the -R option.
