Decompressing vmlinuz

hello,
I need to decompress vmlinuz for debugging purpose.
I tried with the command
od -A d -t x1 vmlinuz | grep '1f 8b 08 00'

it doesn't return any string. It seems that grep cannot locate any "1f 8b 08 00" pattern while it finds the two sub-patterns "1f 8b" and "08 00".
My kernel version is 2.6.24.
Any suggestion?
Thank you in advance

I also tried with
od --width=32 -t x1 vmlinuz-2.6.24-26-generic | grep "1f 8b 08 00"

since I suspected that the pattern was split into more lines,
but I wasn't successful.
