Debian Woody - X problems, no screens found

I have just installed Debian for the first time from CDs. I've used SUSE and Fedora Core already but I'm trying to get something a bit more hardcore running. Problem I have is that I'm unable to get X windows working. I'm using an ATI Radeon 9600XT in an AGP port. I don't really understand the log so it could be something simple. I use a LCD monitor too. I've gone through the setup and I'm sure it's right. Only thing I'm not 100% sure about is the mouse, I have a ps2 mouse and I selected psaux(?, top one in the list)type - ps/2

The error I get on a startx is "no screens found"

I've pasted my xfree86.0.log below, it's pretty large, sorry if I'm being dumb but I'm feeling clueless here.

Do I just need to update x? If I do, how can I do this without an internet connection under Linux?(my mobo integrated NIC isn't supported by default, I will work on that later)A search of the forum revealed a fair few threads, all suggesting reconfiguring but I'm pretty certain that I've got everything right (been following very verbose)and I'm feeling lost and out of my depth :\

Try to erdit yout /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 and replace

Driver "ati"

with

Driver "radeon"

JimBass 01-12-2006 10:16 PM

Also, Debian Woody is ANCIENT. Debian Sarge replaced Woody as the stable version some months ago, and sarge is old compared to most linux distros. What saikee posted is correct and may work, but trying to run newer hardware with ancient software is not going to work well. The devices you are trying to run didn't exist when Woody came out. I see that the box doesn't have internet access, but if you get to a machine that does, I would suggest downloading a newer version of Debian, or getting the CDs sent to you if high speed access isn't available.

Peace,
JimBass

JimBass's comment highly relevant!

In my Debian Woody has a 2.2.20 Kernel! This was the notes I wrote during its installation

(1) Screen set to vesa as ati and radeon failed
(2) Mouse dead, had to set to /dev/psaux
(3) Mouse dead again, two mices found, deleted one and used /dev/input/mice
(4) Keyboard didn't work. OK when changed GB to gb
(5) Disable font path "Unix/:700" by # as Xserver didn't boot
(6) Startx failed but GDM was accepted

Like JimBass said newer Debian Sarge is also ancient with a 2.4.27 Kernel. I have it installed in hda23. It is the only distro in the hda disk that cannot boot itself from the root partition within 137Gb barrier, which covers up to hda32.

Debian Woody boots at hda15 but will be in trouble if the partition number is higher.

Modern Distros like Suse, Fedora and Mandriva are on 2.6.15, 2.6.14 and 2.6.12 kernels respectively and never give me any bother with the hardware.

If one has a dead wish to remain stable then it makes sense to use the oldest kernel around but just don't expect it works seemlessly in modern hardware.

Yes, I'm realising this now. I downloaded the images a long time ago and only recently gotround to installing. I was using a 2.4 kernal on install to be fair but I take your point. Funnily enough, the first 4 of your notes also applied to me and I STILL haven't got x to start properly. I'm presently downloading DVD images for Sarge. Out of interest, I believe that it is possible to install sarge with a 2.6 kernal in the same way I could install Woody with a 2.4 one, is that correct?

Saikee: Tahnks for the suggestion, I hadn't noticed that ATI and Radeon were seperate options. It didn't work though, VESA seemed to work but everything fell down at periphiral startup I think so I've given up with that version now

saikee 01-13-2006 08:03 AM

I believe you can choose a later kernel at the install but take it from me whatever you get from Sarge is still old.

I loaded them because they are parts of the 100 distros in my box.

You may consider putting a few in as well because the technique of booting a Debian with another system, say a Windows, is all you need to know to boot a 100 systems. My two Debians are in 5Gb partition each.
