Debian Squeeze, no Network Manager
 

Okay, so today I decided I was bored with my current Fedora 15 installation and tried a little distro hopping. Eventually I ended up at Debian Squeeze. I downloaded the cd version as a net install won't work because of driver issues. I used the graphical interface to install it.

When it finished installing I booted it up, made sure everything was working. Now in all my past I think 6 linux installations, all I had to do to get the internet working was move a file someone gave me a while to my /lib/firmware. I'm not sure if this is the problem, but no matter what, where ever I go, I can't find an actual manager to connect to the internet. This might be a stupid question to a lot of people, but I'm stumped. There is nothing in the menu's.

Now I've been working with GNU/Linux for almost a year now and have come across many problems, but never like this. I've Googled up and down, and searched the forums here and still nothing. I've looked in the menu's and the only network related thing is network-proxy. Just for kicks I also tried to no luck (Oddly enough, I tried using sudo and it said the package wasn't installed and running worked).

Not a 100% sure, because i only use slackware, but with gnome dont you need to get the network manager applet for gnome ?

Just to add to this thread, does anyone know what CD the network manager is on in squeeze??

Not sure why the other distros would require: Seeing the second apt-get command being a success then it seams you are connected to the net right? What happens when you execute:

Well that's what I thought at first, but my network has a password and I never entered it and they're are no networks around with out passwords. (I'm always on the lookout)

And 0men, I've always used Gnome and never had to install a manager

have a look here and let me know if you are having similar problems. You probably will have to add some additional repositories.
But as I said in the linked thread, I experienced several problems with a pure CD install. So, since you have driver issues with your network card, you might be best advised to install from the DVD.

Well so far I'm not having much problems running anything that need's root. Like it's asking for root permission to mount my Windoze partition and that goes through fine. I don't know about synaptic. I'm not sure if that was installed or not. I'll have to look. Right now I'm downloading the DVD image.... It'll take a while.

Um, okay due to my internet's incredible slow speed, and the dvd being a huge file. And now that I know the problem is because it wasn't on the cd. Does anybody know what cd it is on? That would be so much easier and faster to download.

Okay, A search for network manager comes up with a lot of results. I found two that were of interest.

network-manager-dbg_0.8.1-6+squeeze1_amd64.deb. This is on cd 34. I might have forgot to include this in earlier posts but I am running 64 bit.

network-manager-gnome_0.8.1-2_amd64.deb. This is on CD 5. I'm thinking this is the one I need to download.

I had a similar issue because I chose to install LXDE as the DE rather than Gnome or KDE. I just installed Wicd and apt did the rest.

Well how did you get wicd installed? From a cd or what?

Using apt-get on a wired network connection. Once I installed the firmware I just grabbed it from the apt mirror.
