Debian Netinstall - No X!
 

First off i should mention that im TOTALLY new to linux.

i have loads of experence in windows, but never messed around in dos either, so im only still learning how commandline works etc.
I've tried reading things, and have got some clues but still im stuck with my problem, so here goes.

I installed Debian (Woody) from a netinstall and it all seemed to go fine until i got to the point at which i wanted to "startx".

It makes the screen flicker a few times and then comes back with an error.

The exact error i can't remmber but i got the just of it, if i need to i can hop into linux and find out what it is but it goes mostly like this:

Im trying to teach my self, and i've only just found out that i chose what could be called one of the hardest disto's to install to try it out with.
Main reason i went with debian was that it had a netinstall, but if someone tells me to, then i will just go and get the full CD's of something (as little as possible please!)

Did you choose 'Desktop Environment' during install? If you are new to Linux it is the way to go. If you didn't run 'tasksel' now to access this menu again.

Dear djsmiley2k,
As you are new to Linux, I would suggest beginning with SimplyMEPIS. This is a Debian distribution (important for easy upgrades and adding software after basic install with apt-get) like "Debian" but much easier to install and maintain. I would suggest that you dedicate a PC with a fast internet connection and just let Mepis install and format and set up the hard drive. It is helpful to have very "standard" video card and NIC and sound card to allow ease of auto detection and setup by the linux distro. I had to turn off the NIC card in the BIOS for my MSI nVidia K7N2 Delta motherboard and install a plain PCI NIC card (3com NIC) to get linux to auto setup the NIC card.
I like to learn various operating systems so I have a removeable tray for the hard drive and have purchased several 10 gig drives and extra trays and just swap drives when I want to experiment and retain my winXP and SimplyMepis safe on their own drives.

If you want to have a Debian without wasting time for installation and configuration
then download Ubuntu from www.ubuntulinux.org.
It is a modified Debian SID with a dead easy installation and nice
default system settings (with Gnome 2.8).
It's much easier to install but after all it's Debian, just a different theme and default software respoitory (can be altered manually).
