Can you click with the buttons?
First make sure the touchpad is enabled using the Fn key.
(look in the manual from the laptop)
If you can click and only tapping doesn't work,
install gsynaptic
as
root
Code:

apt-get install gsynaptics

i can use the toucphad as a mouse and i can use it to scroll but tapping doesnt work. I installed gsynaptic like you said and rebooted...still nothing

You need to launch gsynaptic and configure the touchpad => enable tapping
There should be an icon in system->preferences=>touchpad
or type gsynaptics in a terminal
