What Debian Linux are you using? Did you install from a CD? IF so is it the stable version called Woody?
Usually in most distributions X is already installed
If you did a basic install of Woody version from CD-ROM.............

Do you get to a boot prompt, where you can type something?
If so do this
cd /etc
In the etc directory do this
ls
or do this
cd /X11
If you do not have an X11 directory you have not installed X
If you do have it it is installed but not working.

And
the software should tell you waht type of Linux you are running (and ask your brother!) as it starts up and sometimes at the prompt.
Is it RedHat, Debian, Mandrake,SuSe ?

u should b able to install X during the debian install. but u can always do "apt-get install x-window-system" or go to the xfree86 homepage and download the latest version of X and install it youself. there's documentation and such on the page.
