That's perfect guys, thanks for the advice. I think I am moving in the right direction now but one last thing, could you point me to a mirror site with Debian 4 rescue disk?
I tried searching all over the net with no luck.

Why you need a Debian4 RescueDisk?

Rescue the data first, fix the OS second.
Does the "colleague" get to go home while you spend your weekend fixing his bonehead "suggestion"?

first, copy all of your critical files using your rescue disk that you could use to rebuild the server from scratch in case you have to.

Then use clonezilla to make a full system img, then run a repair for bad sectors, then run clonezilla again in case bad sectors screwed the first one, and hopefully you will then have something to work with.
