Debian Lenny problems

Hi Every one,

I am new to linux. I have loaded Debian Lenny ver-5.0.7 on my Acer Extensa 4620 laptop (Intel Centrino Duo; Intel 945 chipset; 1GB ram; 80GB HDD and DVD RW). I tried Open SuSE but soon switched to Debian because of its very open nature. I managed to install some of the non free items like adobe flash player 10.2.152, third party softwares like Skype and Firefox.

My web cam is working fine.

I am facing problem with the audio. Playback is fine. I am not able to capture the audio either from the on board mic or from the external mic and line inputs (They were working fine with windows).

The second problem that I am facing is I am not able to play VCDs on.
I have installed available codecs and files like gstreamer, ffmpeg and libdvdcss2 which are available from the repositories. (The sources are pointed to the main server and third party sources including debian-multimedia non free.
The available VLC player(ver 0.8.6) is also installed.
Both totem and vlc are playing all video files, non encrypted DVDs and commercial DVDs of my region.

But neither is playing VCDs.

Please some one help me with this.

Balu.

For the audio problem, try opening your mixer (in KDE3 it's kmix, not sure about KDE4 or Gnome). Sometimes you have to check a box to enable the microphone to the system. I would check those settings first. I believe the audio device is mounted at /dev/dsp, but I'm not entirely sure. You can try cat /dev/dsp > streamfile and then try playing it with mplayer.

As to the VCD problem, you might try mplayer. But can you post specific error messages which might help us to help you. Enclose them in the code brackets.

Did you add debian lenny backports & Debian multimedia to sources?

Debian Lenny Sound & VCD

Thanks pljvaldez & EDDY1 for your quick response.

I am using gnome. All the settings for the alsa mixer are done and all combinations have been tried. Changing the input source, capture levels and stuff like that.

I will try what you have written about the driver location and get back.

The playback is fine from audio files, video files, audio CDs and DVDs of my region.

It should be some thing to do with the right kind of driver for my hardware. It is an Intel HDA.

On windows Realtek worked well.

To the sources debian-multimedia lenny main, lenny main non free and lenny backports are added.

The error message that I am getting while trying to play VCD is as follows:
"Could not open location; you might not have permission to open the file."

The right codec for playing VCDs does not seem to be there. I was not able to gather much information from the net.

Please some one help me in solving the problem or in finding the right source of information.

Thanks to you all.

Balu.

Additional codecs might be available through debian multimedia.

VCD is using MPEG 1, VLC come with that by default. As a workaround, try to open the VCD with you file-manager, there should be a folder named MPEGAV, open this and you should find a file called AVSEQ01.DAT. This is actually the film, in MPEG 1-format. Try to open that with VLC and look if that works.
