Debian jessie does not boot from external hdd
I have an external hdd I want to install debian to. So I downloaded .iso, boot to flash drive, then runned installer and went through the installation steps. The problem is that after the installation when I select external hdd as bootable from bios nothing happens (just blinking cursor actually).
The only thought I have is that I could make a mistake during installing grub boot loader - I've selected external drive to install loader to instead of master boot record of my first inernal drive (I have windows on it actually). Is that right? I want it to be bootable on other PC too. Looks like I've missed something. Does someone know the solution? Thanx. |
You could have tried installing to the mbr of the first (windows) disk and the Debian Grub should have detected both systems and created an entry. When you installed Grub to the second drive, did you select to install it to the mbr of that drive or to the root partition of Debian? Should have been the former option.
Which version of windows do you have? |
I have win 8.1 on internal drive.

If I'll install to the mbr of the first drive will that hdd be able to boot on another pc?
Also, I went through installation steps again and didn't notice step for selecting where install grub to. It asks if I want to install to the mbr of the first drive, select no, then it asks what drive should it install grub to, select external hdd where I've installed debian. |
If you install grub to mbr of internal hard drive and you remove the external hard drive then you won't be able to boot the internal hard drive. During the installation there should have been an option to install grub somewhere else.

I selected external drive when it asked me to select disk it will install boot loader to (after rejecting installing to the mbr of internal drive)

At the blinking cursor what happens if you hit the tabe or esc key

Boot the Debian on the flash drive. Then open a web browser and go to the site below and read the instructions, then download and run the 'bootinfoscript' and post the output, a results.txt file:
