Debian ISO Downloads - Why So Many?

Hello, all!

Alright I just went to download Debian, and when I went to the full install download, there are 8 DVD ISOs for it... Why is this? Last I knew, Ubuntu's download was only one ISO...

I am wanting to download the Debian ISO so that I can modify it a bit (add a couple of packages to allow playing Minecraft faster on comps) and be able to distribute it to some friends in the dorm at the school I go to (no internet there, so everything needs to be included).

Any idea why so many for the Debian one? Is it because Ubuntu downloads packages while it installs? If that is so, is there a Debian download that has all of the base stuff, nothing else? (doesn't even need to have a desktop).

Thanks!

The 8 DVDs include the full package repository Main section. Ubuntu doesn't do this at all. if you just want to do an install all you need is DVD 1, you could even do a very minimal install with CD 1 and just add the applications you want/need.

Ah, cool! I'll go grab CD 1 and mess around with that then.

Thanks!

If you just want games you can download a distro called Linux Gamers is a live CD that comes pre loaded with lots of games. Here is the link

Good luck to you.

Thanks for the response!

I've actually been considering loading that up on a flash drive so that I can play games at school... But the reason that I am wanting to download a basic ISO is that I am wanting to modify it to include certain packages, as well as add the required files into it to run Minecraft. I'm not really wanting much else bloating it.

Well, if that's the case and if you feel comfortable why don't you download the netinst cd, it's about 180MB from memory. It will install the basic cli system and at the same time with a wired connection you can download and install only the graphical things you want.
