Debian installation, X says "no screens found"

I don't understand what is going on. My XF86Config file has all the info matched up with my video card perfect, my monitor rates/depth/res are all correct, I have a Screen sectoin defined with the monitor like it's supposed to be, but when I try and startx, it crashes with "no screens found". Am I missing something? Need to see XF86Config?

check /var/log/XFree86.0.log. It will tell you what the problem is. The most likely issue is the vsync and hsync refresh rates in relation to your dipslay size. Make sure you get the correct settings for the monitor either from the manual or their website. To reconfigure the X-server do dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86.

Had this problem too.

Well, this is one/two of two things.

It could be the nvidia drivers and/or the hsync and vsyncs.

If you have an nvidia card, install the drivers, check the syncs, then try again.

I had both probs, and that worked like a chainsaw for me.

Cheers!

I had to recompile my kernel, download new nvidia drivers for my graphics card, and then make a few simple changes to XF86Config.
My monitor now looks 10x as good with these drivers. I had no idea what I was missing :D
