debian ibm/acpi/dchp/volume problems

I just upgraded my kernel in debian sarge to 2.6-686 on my IBM t30 1.6ghz laptop.

using the command
apt-get install kernel-image-686

i rebooted it shows up fine in Grub and boots up fine.I use Gnome interface.
But i am having the following problems.

The battery monitor shows the following problem:

Can't access ACPI events in /var/run/acpid.socket! Make sure the ACPI subsystem is working and the acpid daemon is running:

And now after kernel upgrade to 2.6 i no longer can use the internet.
so i think dchp seems to of stopped working since i installed new kernel.so i can't access the internet with my cable modem via ethernet like i was able to do before.

As well as the systems sound won't go out of Mute.

Previously when i had Kanotix i had acpi battery monitor problem but i fixed it but i don't remember how i did it.
I've searched google and had no luck in fixing my problems.
I am very happy with Debian and comfortable with it.

I had a very similiar problem with an IBM thinkpad when I upgraded it from 2.4.2X to 2.6.Y. The problem with the network card is easily fixed, and the battery monitor problem is from the same source. All that you need to do is to add the line "acpi=off" into your grub entries, then everything is happy. You can read my post about the problem and solution HERE

Peace,
JimBass

Btw i use Gnome interface.

ok i've edited into menu.lst grub

title Debian GNU/Linux, kernel 2.6.12-1-686
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.12-1-686 acpi=off root=/dev/hda1 ro
initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.12-1-686
savedefault
boot

it partically worked i can now see the battery monitor but it's all red like it's not fully charged, yet it is as i fully charged battery whilst laptop was turned off.

But on startup i am still getting pop up saying "No volume control elements and or/devices found. I got that error before i edited the menu.lst

and of course gotta fix to get the dchp.

When i went to turn off laptop. it hung saying powerdown.and i had to hit hold the laptops reboot/on off button down to force it to shutdown.this happens ever since i added the acpi=off

JimBass 11-23-2005 05:46 PM

Gnome has nothing to do with your problems. The DHCP should have been solved by the acpi=off line. It seems that the sound issue may be because you may not have included the drivers for your soundcard. That is just a shot in the dark guess, but it does seem that something is missing. Doies the network card work now at least?

Peace,
JimBass

it's skipping detecting ethernet, wifi mini pci cisco card and sound at start up screen.

i was thinking does the modules file need to be edited???
it is also saying /etc/network is deprecited.
so yeh no internet on laptop :(

the battery monitor still doesn't work. it isn't letting me know that the battery is fully charged. it keeps thinknig it is red flat. and it's a newish battery. i fully charged it when laptop was turned off.

and When i went to turn off laptop. it hung saying powerdown.and i had to hit hold the laptops reboot/on off button down to force it to shutdown.

as well as when i start up laptop i noticed it is skipping the cisco wifi and other things in startup.

Btw i've used Redhat, kanotix on this laptop hard drive installs and they both worked fine with sound and dchp. i only had acpi problems which i fixed under kanotix but i forgot how. i know it had something to do with editing the modules.

i only have Debian on there currently.and i have to use desktop pc to use the net :(
