Question Debian 5.0 - show mounted items on desktop

Is there a way to show mounted items on the desktop? Such as when I plug in an external hard drive, camera, etc..

The default behavior is to have those volumes shown. If that's not the case on your system, open up gconf-editor and browse to apps/nautilus/desktop. See whether "volumes_visible" is checked on.
