Dealing with "Windows Network" in LM 17.2

I have found a file called Windows Network in LM. It has a special symbol on the icon. When I click it a box appears saying
"Password required for Workgroup.
Username [my LM username]
then an empty password field

under that three radio buttons:
- forget password immediately
- remember password till you logout
- remember forever

then CANCEL | CONNECT
============================================

My LM password does not work here.

What is the function of windows Network and how is it configured, please?

Any suggestions appreciated.

It's probably asking for whatever password is configured for connecting to that network, which is almost certainly not your Mint user password. Likely the easiest thing to do is to ask whoever administers the "Windows network" how to proceed.

This thread might help. http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...rk-4175528765/

I don't have a windows network that I know of, therefore I have no network administrator. Could this apply to vpn?

My experience with VPNs is limited so I'm hardly an authority, but off the top of my head it seems unlikely to me.

I do have a Windows network and I'm running Mint, but I've not run into anything like that. Then, again, I use Enlightenment for a desktop.

Try this--this is a shot in the dark--open a file manager, navigate to the "Desktop," find that item, right-click, and view the properties, then let us know what you find.

This is my first time posting from LinuxMint itself. I am assembling all the functionality I had with Windows. Some of the stuff is in different places.

Attached are 3 screenshots of Windows Network properties.

Well, that shot in the dark missed the target, now, didn't it?

I have a computer that I need to boot to a Live CD for testing purposes. I'll do so tomorrow with Mint and see if I get that icon. Which flavor of Mint are you using--MATE, Cinnamon, or something else?

The file browser has a built in samba client for browsing windows network computers. Normally if you click on the windows network icon it will display a workgroup icon and if you click on the workgroup icon it will display individual computers within that workgroup. And clicking on the individual computers you will see their shares and clicking on a share will display its contents. If a share requires a username/password a window should popup asking for such information.

Not sure what is going on but it appears that clicking on the windows network icon your trying to connect to a share which is asking for a username/password. That username/password is for that share. What other computers or devices are on your network?

I agree with michaelk that the item is the standard "Windows Network" icon in the file manager.

If you have any Samba shares on another Linux computer, it might be trying to connect to one of them, as they look like Windows shares to the file manager.

You can use nMap to find what other computers are on your subnet as suggested in this thread on the Ubuntu forums.

Since my computer is not part of a network other than whatever the wifi router and vpn set up (workgroups), then I assume this is a non-issue for me.
