I think you meant you mounted '/dev/sdb1' on /data. Is there any error message?

Can you elaborate more on your setup?

Show the exact mount command.

Did you mounted again after rebooting?

You need to be the 'root' user to use the mount command.
Try, in a terminal as the root user,
Code:
mount /dev/sdb1 /data
N.B. If your dive is external, the drive designation (/dev/sdb1) can/will change when removed/reinserted.

How is that external disk connected?

Does anything show up in /var/log/messages when you connect it?

Are there any USB-related messages at all when you plug the cable in? Does it appear that the drive is getting power? Is this a 3.5 inch drive that needs external power to run?

Please disconnect the drive, and then in a terminal, as root, run
Code:
tail -f /var/log/messages
Once that's running, plug in the external drive. Copy and paste all of the messages that are printed out into your reply here so we can see what's happening when the drive is connected.

That's just talking about a USB hub and a keyboard and mouse. What, exactly, did you (un)plug there?

And sda5 is NOT your external drive. It's the fifth partition on your primary drive. Please run "df -h" to see what's currently mounted where, to get an idea of the current mapping of your drives.
