Damn Vulnerable Linux + VirtualBox + Mac Mini

So I am not really new to Linux, I have quite a lot of experience with building LFS, working with Ubuntu, SUSE, Backtrack and other distros, but I am completely new to DVL so I'm posting this here.

I don't know what I'm doing wrong, but when I fire it up in VirtualBox NOTHING works. I get to the login prompt, login using the default root/toor and startx to start KDE and the Desktop. That all works fine. So of course now I'm getting excited because I want to PLAY!

But when I go into the training material, nothing works. The system randomly shuts down on me and I have to restart KDE, the training manuals simply do nothing, most of the applications (including Terminal!) just do nothing when you click on them. No lagging, no hourglass like it's hung, no nothing. It just sits there - the system is not frozen.

Is it a conflict with running it in a virtual machine? I can't imagine someone would make a security testing distro that couldn't be run in a VM, and I have run every other Linux distro I've used in a VM at one point or another too. Did I just get a crap copy of it or something?

Someone help me out here, I want to learn how to make this work; it seems like an extremely valuable tool but it's pretty much worthless in its current state.

Any ideas??

Thanks!

First, the system is built to fail.
Try booting it with init3.
