daemons and permissions

Why is it I can only get daemons running as superuser?

That can't be right.

The trouble is compounded in mysqld, I can't seem to log on as a normal user.

I'm telling you, us newbies, spend most of our time as superuser .. to stay as normal user ... implies a pretty optimised system ....

i spend all of my time as super user (only cause I'm still securing/installing/configuring little things here and there, I'm a bit lazy so it takes a longggg time..)

anyways most daemons are called up before any user is logged in, and as far as linux is concerned, until someone logs in, every program run gets super user status (was ran by that user), as for that mysqld thing goes, i have no clue... all i know is it has something to do with a database...)

Thanks for answer. Reassuring to hear I'm not the only one.

I suppose this isa MySQL question really, as you can only get the daemons runiing as root, and then you can only create a database as root too.

SQL reference manual Ch.3 although good, is weak on that point.
