what is a daemon?

Are all marked with a "?" (question mark)in the list that we get when "ps -e" command is used, daemons?

What does xinetd does?

A daemon is a program or process that sits idly in the background until it is invoked to perform its task. xinetd is a way to configure and control such services like daemons on your system.

Just think of it as what is called in the Windows world for "Service"

THANKS! What does the "?" that apears under TTY column means, when "ps -e" command is typed. Does it mean "OK this process is a daemon". Does the "?" appear for the processes other than daemons? Or am I worying too much?

The question mark means the process is not attached to a terminal. Daemons are not, and often processes that are started from another process are not. Try "\ps -t?" vs "\ps -t" (backslash escapes any "ps" alias) to see.
