"Cut & Paste" To and From Shell
 

Ok, this is as novice a question as one can ask, but I am quite tired of typing out these long scripts to and from my console when I could just cut and paste them in order to transfer them here or from here to my console. I have googled away and cannot find a single website that explicity shows how to cut and paste in Linux. Again, it seems the Linux community is a bit lacking in documentation of the extreme basics of operating the OS. It's like that genius professor you had in college who wants to explain partial differential equations before teaching you single variable calculus, or the physics teacher who wants to give you the in's and out's of gravity by explaining General Relativity and the Tensor calculus before teaching the basics of Newton's apple.

For example, I have a Linux "Install and Configuration Handbook" that I bought a couple of years back. I was a complete newbie to Linux then and subsequently gave up on it all together (because I never got my modem or soundcard working) until a few days ago when I installed Mandriva 2006 and Ubuntu. Anyway, the book would say "to do this or that you need to log-in as root, then type such and such." The problem I had with that? The book did not tell you HOW to log-in as root! The authors, undoubtedly respected Linux geeks, did not have a clue that the target audience may not have had degrees in computer science from MIT and 20+ years experience in the *nix environment as they themselves did. And, the target audience did include, according to their preface, complete newbies. It's baby steps, man, you gotta crawl before you can walk or run a marathon.

If there is a guide online that illustrates the very fundamentals of Linux commands from the shell and covers issues such as cut and paste, I have yet to come across it. You have to be able to know what a shell is and how to open it before one throws commands at you.

So, anyone care to tell me how to cut-and-paste text, specifically to and from the terminal window?

You should just be able to select the stuff you want to copy (with the mouse) and then paste it where you want, by clicking your wheel button.

Cool. Thanks a ton, nylex. I feel stupid now. I tried every variation of ctrl- +xyz I could think of to no avail. LOL

yeh it had me stumped for ages, but it can be used in almost any linux app so is damn useful.

And you make a good point, i wish you luck with learning linux, it's worth it ;)

Au contraire....Linux is awash in documentation. It's just not all in one place....

Suggestion: ask short questions---put rants, speeches, etc in their own posts.

One thing I learned a while back was to always press the right button on the mouse. It is now a universal standard --at least in Linux and Windows--to put logical things there (including copy and paste)

the keyboard way (at least in a virtual terminal in gnome) is ctrl+shift+c for copy and ctrl+shift+v for paste.
