custom email

I know this is probably a very Noob question, but...I am currently working on making my web server, and I was wondering if it is possible to make an email server so that I can have my own custom email address. I dont want to sign up with a web service that will do it for me i want to have my own address. Any suggestions?

do like i do: get a long (but free ) domain name from dyndns.org. Setup your mail server on your box. For example mine is hseritt 'at' eztechsupport.ath.cx

Other than that there is no other way to do it without paying for even a domain name much less hosting.
