cups oddity with lpadmin

I placed this in the newbie forum as I am a newbie with cups but not with general linux so admins feel free to move this if it is appropriate to do so.

I am running Slackware 13.1 64bit and the cupsd config is the one pretty much the default. I can connect to it from my browser at http://localhost:631 and play around with the options with no problem.

I have been following a previous post on configuring a PDF printer

http://http://www.adobetutorialz.com...iller-PPD-file

I am at the point of using lpadmin on the command line to create the pdf printer with the adobe distiller ppd file. When I try to do so it just hangs and eventually I get a connection timeout.

When I do an lpinfo -v I get the same thing. If I try lpinfo -h localhost:631 the request returns immediately with nothing.

Anybody have a clue on what might be happening ?

I tried to create the PDF printer through the cups web ui but I did not get far.

thanks

First thing to do w/ CUPS when you have problems is to bump
the debug level for logging up.

What line are you using to add the printer driver?

As for
Quote:
lpinfo -h localhost:631
returning w/o any result
immediately - that'll be because you didn't ask it to do anything w/
the "alternate host" you specified; try
Code:
lpinfo -h localhost:631 -v
instead.

Cheers,
Tink

Thanks for your assistance tinkster

I'll bump up the debug level when I get a chance but here is the command I am using to add the printer. All requisite directories and printer definition files are in their correct places.

Code:
/usr/sbin/lpadmin -p PDF -v pdf:/tmp/PDF -E -P /usr/share/cups/model/ADIST5.PPD
So I just now added -h localhost:631 to the lpadmin command and voila ... it worked.

I guess maybe at some point the version of lpadmin the guy was using defaulted to localhost:631 for the printer host or he just omitted it in his examples.

It worked ... I see it !!!

thanks!
