CUPS modification and installation will fail
 

Hello,
I need to correct some issues in a CUPS filter and downloaded the 1.5.3 version of CUPS and recompiled the unaltered code and then installed this but after this the CUPS system was no longer working.
I am using an Ubuntu 12.04 which is using the 1.5.3 CUPS.
I am puzzled by this and need some help since any modification not being able to test makes no sense.
What can cause the issue that CUPS is no longer able to start after the "make install"?

You need to remove the package you compiled for yourself and re-install the original, then try to correct the issues you have rather than mix roll-your-own app installs with the pre-packaged.

What kind of issues are you having with the CUPS filter?

I need to fix some commands in a filter and organize and structure another filter so it can be included in on of the next builds of CUPS.
I am not a real Linux guy but have to do this as part of my responsibilities.

reinstalling the original driver will not help as I have to check the changes that I will be doing to the filter and therefor need the CUPS dev env.
