CUPS-gutenprint (with Epson printer) not working on Debian Lenny / Mandriva 2009.1

On my renewed machine with Asus M3N78-EM and 64bit AMD Phenom CPU, printing (with Epson Stylus Photo R230) is not possible in any Linux distro and CUPS with Gutenprint. No Problem at all with Windox.
The CUPS installed (localhost:631) printer is detected for installation and its properties. Testpage will not print as it stops after 7% saying will try again. Sometimes (direct after booting!) I get some 7% (?) of a job printed. But mostly I get the message "Printer may not be connected".
I have installed on both Linuxes several times and checked different configuration with no positive result.

Did you choose the right driver for the printer model ?
The escp2-r230 driver should be included in the Gutenprint package, but you have to choose the right one yourself when installing the printer.
