further suggestion

download thew source for memtest86

it is a little op sys with an embedded memory test app

play with it and then start byt using his bootloader to load some small thing you write

it is a linux distribution

OR

downloiad to 20 yar old source for linus's firs op sys versin of linux

not so easy to work with since it is waritten in an assembler that is no longer in use - as I recall
