creating a system files on an external drive
 

Hello,

I have a problem modifying a partition on my external drive :
I had linux installed on my laptop's internal drive and a FAT32 system fileon my external drive (it is an external drive that is connected to my pc via a pc card).

As I wanted to remove windows, i have tried to replace my fat32 partition by a linux ext3 partition. Now, it seems that when linux is booting, the ext drive is not yet connected and the system tries to find the external's drive system files. As it cannot find it, I can't boot into linux.

Does anyone know what type of partition I have to create on my external drive so that linux launches ?

Ok, so what have you done? You installed Linux onto your laptop's internal harddisk, and you're trying to reformat your external one as ext3? As long as you're not trying to boot from your external harddisk, there shouldn't be any problems. What errors are you getting?

I did the automatiq partitionizing on my internal drive (a /, a swap and a /home partition) and I wanted to add another one on my external drive. By default, a /user partition was suggested, so this is what I took.

The whole installation process goes fine, but when I tried to reboot afterwards there was a filesystem error and I had to remove the external drive from my fstab file so that it reboots.

Since I have organized my partitions in an other way (they don't use the external drive anymore) it is not vital for me to have the exact answer, but I would be interested if you knew what kind of partitions you can add to the three existing ones (for example, could you have some /home directories split on two drives ? Or can you give any ckind of name to the partition once it has the right type ?
