create linux partition on hard disk

I have winXP on my computer and I want to install linux so I can still use the XP (there are more users on this computer).
how can I create linux partition without damaging the XP?

I have 80GB harddisk with 2 partition(each partition is about 40GB) I want to convert 20GB for the linux partition. how many of this 20GB should be ext2 (or 3?) and how many should be swap? (I have pentium4 3GHz with 512MB RAM)

I just had the same question few days before and got some help here. So I feel it is my turn now to help others :):)

You can use Partition Magic to repartition your HD without damaging Windows XP. YOu can create a new partition of 20GB where u can install Linux.

It is recommended to use SWAP size twice the amount of RAM. So in your case it should be 1GB. You can use the rest as ext3 file system partition.

I hope this helps.
