create launcher in gnome

Hi folks,

I have been confused by the launchers in gnome desktop for a long time.
In short, there are two questions I want to ask:

(1) I know how to create a new launcher, just by right clicking the desktop.
But once a launcher is created, if I want to change the path of the command,
how can I do that? Select the launcher, Right click, choose the property,
there are 4 tabs: Basic, Emblems, Permissions, Notes. I see no entry for
the path of command.

(2) This one is about icon. I know how to find the icons for many common
kde/gnome programs/applications. But when I try to associate an icon
for a not-so-popluar program (for example, meld, the visual diff program),
I can not find where the corresponding icon is. And the question is if it is
the case that there is no default icon at all for those programs. so what we
can do is just to pick up any icon we like? I don;t think it is true, because
there is icon on the title bar when the program is running.
I know in windows the icon of an executable can be automatically extracted
if there is one. Why linux can not do that? Or simply I don't know how?

Many thanks in advance!

If I was you and there is more than one way to do this, but I would delete the old "launcher" and create a new one with the command I wanted executed, this will take about 30-60 seconds to do.
As for the icons, yes get any icon you want , make one even , download one, whatever. That is the beauty of Linux, you can do anything you want to customize your box.....good luck!

Yes. you are right. Of course I can delete the old one and create a new one. And it won't take a long time
(maybe 30-60 seconds if I don't need to specify the icon, the icon problem again). However, just curious
why I can not modify it directly. Then it will take only 10 seconds.

As for the icon, yes, I can always create one, download one, find one ... But what I want is just the exact
one which appears on the title bar of that program.

I love linux and hope linux can do almost anything convenient in Windows.

Thanks.
