Create FTP account

I am going to setup a server, probably using RH9 or RHEL3, for FTP purposes.

What's the steps needed to create one? create user.. directory etc.. I'm at a loss..

secondly is it possible to create one ftp account that uploads to a folder, such that 4 other ftp account can access that folder via soft link?

Meaning say. i have a mainftp account which uploads general stuff.

Then i got 4 other accounts, for different offices perhaps, which uploads and downloads their respective stuff. But inside each of these 4 accounts, they have a folder which will link to the mainftp account (via softlink?) to access the general stuff. possible?

I tried once (when my linux knowledge was.. hardly call a knowledge) and it didn't work.. so thought i ask you guys now.. thanks man.. this place really help me the past few months...

TIA!

You should start the dameon vsftpd (comes with RH installations.)

Once the ftp server (vsftpd) is running all the users except root have access to their home folders like this:

ftp://username@host.com

I think this is self explanatory. The secure thing to do is chroot users as they login, but to allow soft links, you must not chroot a user to his home directory as this makes other directories outside of his jail (chroot jails the user to his home diectory) invisible to him and inaccessible.
